Terese Newman About the Work My work is a manifestation of my current obsession—“things that are missing” —especially within one’s spiritual life. My efforts to fill-in the missing items—such as missing prayers, missing guidance, missing time, missing emotions or missing security—are attempts at resolution by recreating the missing component and setting a stage for its existence. The results are colorful scenarios that narrate the desire to have completeness. These are figurative, Frankenstein-esque works with Christian overtones and a vague sense of humor. Many of my works include celestial remains; a reference to the ethereal and to spiritual guidance. How else can I make these things tangible? Background Terese Newman holds a B.F.A. from the University of Connecticut and an M.F.A. from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. At both universities she studied printmaking and book arts. She has shown her woodblock prints and beeswax oil paintings in group shows in New York City, Philadelphia, Hartford, New Haven and Santa Fe, NM. She taught printmaking at Paier School of Art and is currently working at an advertising agency in Essex. |
